I think one of the reasons why I people-watch so much, is because we are so conflicted with organic predispositions. Naturally people want to be happy. We do what we can so that we can enjoy life. We all have our own way of doing it whether it be enjoying friends, socializing, drinking, drugs, sports, photography, working on your career, relationships, sex, reading, painting, being suspended by hooks in your back, sky diving, getting into fights at sporting events, watching movies, telling jokes, or sleeping the whole day away (plus countless others). Whether those things bring “true” happiness is up for debate, but we still seek to be happy.
At the same time, we come into this world extremely selfish. Think about it. Most people, in a dire situation, will do whatever they can to save themselves, and those who claim they would give up their happiness or lives for someone else are still making themselves happy by knowing they helped someone. We aren’t nice to other people because we like how it makes us feel crappy. We do it because it makes us feel happier about ourselves. Thus we are naturally selfish. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS.
We cannot help certain traits of who we are. No one is perfect. No one has ever made it through life without some sort of mistake. I just wish more people were truly honest about how ridiculous we humans can be. We just want to be happy and enjoy ourselves, and we struggle to get along with other people including the ones we care about because we are, by instinct, selfish.
I think we would understand each other better if we knew how much every human being has in common. The good and the not so good. Why lie about it, or pretend it isn’t there? Instead, try to understand it so that we can make some sense out of us. Cause really, we humans are weird. I like weird.
